Relaxation therapy.

Some days at work have me at the point of drooling madness. The vast majority of the time I manage to walk around with my head in the clouds totally oblivious to my surroundings. But today I felt like I could of quite happily set the place ablaze and watched the towering inferno that would ensue from a nice little vantage point I’d picked out for myself beforehand, all of which would have been done with a content smile upon my face.

Luckily enough for the owners of my workplace (and the people within) I had the foresight to bring my sweet salvation with me; – music. I am a bit of a dork in quite a few respects and especially so when it comes to both music and film. I love electronica and I find it really relaxing. Now, those of you that are not dance music enthusiasts will no doubt point to its repetitive beats as a source of great irritation, but it has a sort of metronome effect on me and calms my down when I find my usually cool exterior being compromised by the rage brewing underneath.

So I thought I’d post a little example of what I mean. Here’s ‘Balaton’ by Pryda – the song that saved a workplace in Bristol from going up in flames.

  • That’s bloody good stuff, JJ – I’m impressed.

To be honest, I haven’t listened seriously to much electronic music.

The nearest I’ve come recently is with Massive Attack and some of William Orbit’s stuff – notably Strange Cargoes, although i suspect that they’re a bit more ‘mainstream’ than Pryda.

A bit further back, I recall buying Joy Division’s first album in a shop in Manchester, and my mate and myself sitting open mouthed as we listened to the opening bars of ‘Disorder’. It is in no way electronica, but for me it was what convinced me that there was more out there than blues-based guitar oriented rock. since then I’ve always had an open mind where music is concerned.

A very loooooong way further back, I also recall buying my very first record in a shop in Leicester. I was about 5, and it was early electronic – ‘Telstar’ by the Tornadoes.

    Music is important stuff.

Too important to be left in the hands of arseholes like Simon Cowell.

  • ‘Pryda’ is actually the psudonym Eric Prydz uses when he releases more non-commercial records.

Massive Attack are brilliant – they’re not only one of my favourite groups because of their music, but also because they are local Bristol boys. As for electronica you should have a little search and find a few songs by Booka Shade or Spirit Catcher who are currently the main two groups I really enjoy listening too.

    Glad you enjoyed the track.

  • Thanks for the tips.

They will have to be good to beat Bill Bailey’s cover of ‘Das hokey cokey’

  • I’m not sure that’s possible.

  • Damn fine music Jay-Jay, I think our music tastes are very much the same… I really like the way you express yourself… Very nice blog… I’ll be back… Your Avatar made me a little nervous about you but, what fuck can I say about it… I’m a cat!!! :) but not a pussy!!!

Yeah, baby … that’s what I’m talkin’ about.

Jay-Jay, I must say: excellent choice in music. Fabulous! I pulled the earbuds, turned up the volume, and have been dancing my way into some serious feel-good hormones. I’ve hit repeat for about the fourth time now, and valla – I am sweating, and I feel better. Way to get a girl movin. I needed that – Thanks. ~smile~

  • [...] think I’m giddy from the endorphines. I just visited Jay-Jays post on ‘Relaxation Therapy’ and listened to his musical offering: Balaton – by Pryda. He really knows how to get a girl [...]
